After 15 years of living in our house, I will have a long mental list of updates that I would like to make. But with ORT Malibu renewal in full swing, I try to keep my focus (and my budget) on small, strategic changes -I approach as “micro” updates instead of a complete overhaul.
Our living room already lived with the same furniture, the same carpet and the same plank styling since our last update in 2021. It started to feel … a bit old. I was not looking for a big make -over, but I knew that a few, other adjustments could shift the energy and bring new life into the outdoor space.
So the past month I became strategic about making subupages that I knew would have a big impact – and to be honest I am surprised at how different the room feels. It is proof that even a few simple changes can create a house that feels fresh, inspiring and reflects where you are Now.
Scroll through to a look in my refreshing living room – and subtips to inspire your WN -Lentevernewing.

Refresh your plank styling
If you have many open shelves like me, it can be easy to establish on a shelf setup of the bat of the bat and which it will never touch again. But renewing your shelves can stimulate the entire room immediately, and you can simply rearrange it that you already have. I like to walk around my house and pull pieces from other rooms to mix it all – see it as “shopping my own house.”
This time I started with larger anchor pieces (such as a ceramic bowl and a pile of books) and from there layered with smaller, meaningful objects. While you think in terms of scale and negative space.
Tip: Eleven arrogant your shelves, stir one or two items and see if you look better. A few thourhtfly placed pieces often have more impact than boards that feel packaged.

Reconciling the way you are art
We had always centered one large artwork above the fireplace – and while it worked, it started to feel a bit too formal. So I decided to break the “rules” with a smaller piece of agament leaned the wall off-center“ The balanced it with a sculptural vase and olive branch on the other side of the tablecloth.
I fell in love with this photo of Byron Bay in neutral tones, ordered to print and took it to Framebridge for adapted framing. The rounded corners of this axle frame really increase and ensure that the high quality feels (but at a great deal than traditional adapted framing.)
Tip: Don’t be afraid to play with asymmetry. It brings an organic, effordless feeling into a space that feels more modern and lives.

Work your coffee table -atmosphere at
One of the larger changes in our living room was this lounge-you-salon table, so that the room immediately made itself feel more relaxed and inviting. Then I put a few of my favorite coffee table books, which is so simple to bring personality into a room.
Tip: Coffee table books are my favorite decor accessory because they tell a story about who you are. Step two or three, add a small candle or decorative object on top, and there is immediately a design -POV that is easy to change with the seasons.

Add a new plant to breathe new life into a room
Nothing new life in the room faster than a good during indoor plant. Many of you have followed my black olive tree trip, and although I love the way she looked in space, after several rounds of the shedding of all her leaves I had to admit that it was she used to
So I added to the new inner tree with an airy, Asian inspired feeling that fits perfectly with the influence of Japandi design in our house. I actually bought it locally in Austin (the outside air) and I can’t remember the name of this variety. Does anyone know?
Tip: Choose plants that match the lighting needs of your space and the atmosphere that you make. (And don’t forget: the larger the plant, the greater the impact.)

Lay a new foundation with a rug
One of the simplest ways to fully transform the space? Start from the ground. A new carpet can define the color palette of the room, bring in a cozy texture and immediately shift the mood. This time I went light, with a neutral, organic fabric in a large format to ground the entire space.
I kept our old carpet and rolled it up so that I can change this seasonal – bringing this rug to the front every spring will be such a fun way to give the room a lighter, Brigter feeling.
Tip: If you feel like changing, but not want to replace every – then, concentrate on one large piece – such as the rug – that will set the tone for the rest of the room.

Create cozy spaces for how you live
Although this area is technically not part of the same room, I had shown you our cozy media room that is outside the living room, so that you see how the two spaces relate to each other.
This is the space where the children are hanging around, Henry plays video games and builds Lagos and we watch family films. And to be honest. I would neglect it a bit, in terms of design. So it was the perfect time to move the Pietes that were previously in my living room (the white oak coffee table and pieces on the shelves) to breathe new life into space without making some new purchases.
Having said it, we really had a new bank here, and I wanted Subsubhit who felt in line with my style and was also extremely handy. The luxury sofa from Homebody was exactly the piece that this space needed. You can move it to the “Zero Gravity Wellness mode” (ie it secretly deteriorates) for the ultimate comfort of films.
Your dream house is a feeling
During one of my workshops by Vision Board earlier this year, Woman asked a question that stayed with me: “What if my dream house feels out of reach?”
It led to a conversation I think about. Our dream house is not about square photo, price tags or “perfect” design. It’s about feeling. And the truth is that we can now start creating that feeling – small shift at the same time.
Here are a FET Journal instructions that we have investigated together. Maybe they will also wrap you for you:
- What does your dream house do Feeling like it?
- How does it speak until your Sensa -what music plays, what scents fill the air?
- How do you feel in your bed?
- How do you spend time on your dream day?
As you sit with these questions, remember: every small change, regardless of whether it is a new rug, a re-stylized board or a tree that reaches to the ceiling adds to a house that feeds you, inspires you and reminds you that life now.
