Residents in the UAE are enjoying an extended weekend after the beginning of Eid Al Fitr was announced on Sunday.
The country’s Moon-sighting committee – a group of astronomers, court officials and advisers from the Emirates’ Islamic authority – gathered on Saturday night to try to see the new crescent moon heralding the start of Shawwal, the 10th month of the Islamic calendar.
The sighting was confirmed, meaning that Eid began on Sunday, March 30, marking the end of Ramadan. Employees in the UAE have been given three days of paid leave from Sunday until Tuesday, April 1, for the festival.
Every year, celebrations are planned across the UAE to mark the end of the fasting month. Here are some places where you can watch fireworks and take part in free events.
Starting Friday, this Dubai family attraction will host Eid fireworks display every night until April 5. The show starts at 10pm during Ramadan and at 9pm from the first day of Eid Al Fitr. Global Village has also extended operating hours for Eid, with the gates remaining open until 1am each night. Entry costs apply.
Jumeirah Beach
Fireworks will light up e& Beach Canteen, the annual beachside dining pop-up at Jumeirah Beach on the first day of Eid Al Fitr at 8pm. The family-friendly hub for food, music, entertainment and activities will also feature traditional Emirati treats on the first and second days of Eid. This year’s e& Beach Canteen will remain open until April 13.
