Dubai continues to solidify its position as a premier global tourism destination, achieving remarkable milestones and unveiling visionary projects that promise to enhance its appeal further. From record-breaking airport traffic to innovative architectural developments, Dubai’s tourism sector is experiencing unprecedented growth.
Record Passenger Traffic at Dubai International Airport
In 2024, Dubai International Airport (DXB) handled a record 92 million passengers, marking a 6% increase from the previous year. This surge underscores Dubai’s status as the Middle East’s largest tourism and trade hub. In response to this growth, plans have been approved for a new 128 billion dirham ($34.85 billion) passenger terminal at Al Maktoum International Airport. This facility is set to become the world’s largest airport, with a capacity of up to 260 million passengers, and will eventually take over all operations from DXB.
Heineken’s First Brewery in Dubai
Heineken is set to open the first major commercial brewery in Dubai by the end of 2027, through a joint venture called Sirocco with Maritime and Mercantile International of Dubai. This move aims to tap into the growing tourism demand in Dubai, which attracted 17 million visitors last year and 9.31 million in the first half of 2024. The brewery will produce popular brands like Heineken, Kingfisher, Amstel, and Birra Moretti, benefiting from Dubai’s liberalized alcohol laws and its status as a tourism and finance hub. The establishment will focus on sustainability, with plans to reduce its carbon footprint by minimizing sea freight.
Dubai’s Ambition to Host Major Sporting Events
Dubai is striving to become a global powerhouse in tourism by promoting both recreational and professional sports. The United Arab Emirates established the position of Minister of Sports in July, now held by Ahmad Belhoul Al Falasi. Aida Al Busaidy, from Dubai Economy and Tourism, emphasizes the importance of sports in their strategy. With the Dubai 2033 agenda and a budget of $6.3 billion, infrastructure is being developed to promote well-being and attract top-tier events like the ATP 500 tennis tournament and the P1 padel tournament. Additionally, Dubai aims to host the Final Four of the Euroleague and aspires to organize a FIFA World Cup, with the nearest opportunity being in 2042, given that hosts are already designated up to 2034.
Innovative Architectural Developments: The Giant Greenhouse
Plans have been unveiled for a 330-foot “giant greenhouse” in Dubai, set to open by 2028. The Therme Group’s resort will feature cascading pool terraces, lush gardens, and three specialized stations—Play, Relax, and Restore. Designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro, the structure will include indoor and outdoor thermal pools, saunas, steam rooms, water slides, restaurants, and an indoor botanical garden. The development aims to welcome 1.7 million visitors annually and is supported by Dubai’s ruler, Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.
